Done, done, done!

Today I finished my last final for the semester so now I'll have plenty of free time. Free time to do what, you ask?

-write (including blogging)
-play/practice piano
-play with Saki and Pippa (our new kitten)
-write letters
-spend time with my boyfriend

I'm taking one class this semester and quit one of my nannying jobs. And, Jes and I decided today on moving to a new apartment with a pool!

Life feels nicer.

a short update

I'm so close and yet I have so much to do. I am still working on my 12-page Spanish paper or Luis Buñuel. I have three final next week and A LOT more work to do for a fourth class. When I'm done, I will blog, I promise. I want to.

Also, Neill's going to redesign my website so I'll have something complete to put on my calling cards and forward to future employers. Not that I'm looking at all for a job. I've got too much going for me and on right now. Speaking of calling cards, I received my Amelie G business cards last week.

Friday, Margaret found a tiny, tuxedo kitten in the middle of Laurel and Jefferson. So after a short trial sleepover with Saki, Jesse and I have more-or-less decided to adopt her. In the spirit of the royal wedding, the day of which she was found, the girls at Scriptura have named her Pippa. I'm bringing her to work everyday and to the store even when I have class. She's so cute, feisty, adventurous and a scratcher. We're hoping Saki is liking her more and more each day.

I turn 25 in about a month. I'm not going to have party, but Jesse and I are probably going to Ocean Springs for the weekend. I'm going to throw Mia a birthday party though the weekend after so I'm pretty excited about all of that. Just too much to do before then!

Style Blog Attempt, not a clever title though

Somedays I change my clothes three times before being able to walk out the door. Today's outfit was the case. I ended up wearing the same dress I wore Monday but with some additions (sweater and tights) after the rain brought a cold front morning. Layers when the sun will come out midday! Tell me what you think.

Express tights, dress from Francesca's, cardigan sweater from Anthropologie, black Mary Jane heels from Piperlime

I'm going to have to revise my previous post. It sucks. Jesse told me so. He said that it was a big, steaming pile of shit.

(MiLa) Mississippi and Louisiana on a Monday

I wanted to go to the beach, to Mississippi, with Jesse in the middle of the week. But I couldn't get off from work so maybe another week. Ironically, Jesse and I spent dinner this evening at MiLa, named for Mississippi and Louisiana.

I'm not as well-traveled as I'd like to be, but I think I can say that only in New Orleans, on a Monday night anticipating torrential rain, would we have trouble getting a table.

After Jesse met me at work, we discussed what our dinner plans were. We went back and forth about cooking at home, ordering delivery, and making it to one of our neighborhood staples or an unexperienced eatery. Since moving into the CBD, I have often criticized the choices as either too touristy or too expensive to go to on just any night of the week. But, as we walked Saki, we thought, Mike's on the Avenue? Herbsaint? Yokohama? Ste. Marie? Reginelli's? We didn't want to drive back Uptown, but we knew the rain would prevent us from eating outside or venturing too far on foot. When we finally decided that we would go out instead of making grilled portobello and cheese sandwiches and warming up store-bought creamy tomato basil, Jesse said he knew where we were going. He had eaten there the week before, and so now, he was going to surprise me. We began to walk in the direction, and I guessed at it. He was taking me to Delmonico's, an Italian countryside-inspired John Besh restaurant, located in the Roosevelt Hotel. Unfortunately, the hostess asked us if we had a reservation, and when we answered, "no," we were informed that there would not be a free table until 9. So then we decided to go across the street (one and a half blocks from our apartment) to MiLa. We had been in protest of MiLa, actually, for a while. Despite the quaint namesake's fresh, organic, local and celebrated menu, the product of a husband and wife chef partnering, we had not eaten there because MiLa offered foie gras. I had even written a strong email to the restaurant, expressing my distaste for such a barbaric practice. Later, a chef friend of mine had told us that the ducks and geese are not necessarily always force-fed, but you cannot really know unless you ask the kitchen staff. In any case, I don't know what changed our mind, maybe we were just really hungry. Maybe we didn't feel like sushi again (Yokohama, being right across the street in the other direction), but as we walked into the swanky hotel restaurant, we asked for a table and our request was met with a similar response, that it would be hard to squeeze us in. Luckily, the hostess had to take a phone call and a female server walked up to the front and asked us if we needed a table. We let her know what the hostess said, and the kind server offered to give us one of her tables. That was the beginning of a night of treats and surprises.

The wine menu was extensive, mainly by the bottle, but although there were 30 bottles under $30, we decided to stick with water. Later, perhaps we were a little regretful, but I still need to do schoolwork tonight and I have no tolerance and a soft spot for being tired. Jesse and I carefully deliberated, but agreed soon on two appetizers and an entree, all to share. After giving our server our choices, another server brought us an hors d'oeurve of lobster salad on a slice of cucumber. Jesse ate and liked [for the first time] cucumber. One bite for me because like sushi, I have a hard time sometimes taking a smaller bite without pulling a mess along with it (think seaweed wrap). Promptly after, our second server brought us a sampler bundle, sweet potato rolls and scallion corn bread served with two tiny cast iron pots of Louisiana cream butter and pureed lima beans. Essential butter, archetypal butter. The lima beans were simple yet so fresh. Homemade bread, enough said. And, these two offerings before we even got to the food we ordered. Next came the Oysters Rockefeller "Deconstructed" and the Vegetable Puree Soup. The soup was made of pureed beets, celery root, rhubarb and cream. Jesse loved it! I did, too, of course. But, Jesse eats a very select few vegetables. There was lump crab meat, green onion (maybe leeks?), spices, and melt-in your-mouth croutons centered in the bowl of warm squash-colored liquid. We fed each other the other's primary appetizer, though Jesse informed me is poor etiquette per a book he was reading today at Scriptura. When we finished, and I told Jesse that I was already starting to feel full, our shared entree was brought to the table. Sweet Potato Pappardelle. For those of you who don't know what pappardelle is (and we were included among you), it is a sheet pasta. Let me tell you, our divided portions of this vegetarian pasta were more than enough and a melee of delicious flavor. I am a fan! Oh, and the dishware was all very modern and put each of its contents as if on a pedestal, like an offering to a special guest. I have since contemplated what party/event might I host at MiLa.

By the end, maybe we shouldn't have, but we had to see the dessert menu. The choices were difficult, but we settled on our server's suggestion, the root beer float. As she promised, it was like nothing you'll have anywhere else. An ice-cream sandwich, smartly positioned in the middle of a glass-blown, square plate, its top and bottom crystalized sugar, reminiscent of the top of creme brulée. A fig-shaped, thawing root beer solid was perched on the ice cream sandwich. We were glad we ignored the lack of room we saved. And, when the bill came, we were pleasantly surprised, especially considering the fixe pris is $65 a person, and $100 a person with wine pairings. Because veal was essential to that menu, we did not go that route, and gladly so. Our choices suited us just right. Our ticket including tip was roughly the same price as the fixe pris sans wine.

I write too much to ever be a great food critic, but I thought I'd enjoy writing about our whim of a restaurant-going. I hope you enjoyed reading. I hope to get better. Oh, and I regret that we didn't have a camera when we went. We did not anticipate loving our Monday night dinner so much.

How Many Times Have I Begun a Post with . . .

"Where do I begin?" I'm hanging out in Loyola's law school computer lab waiting for Jesse to be finished with his class at 9:15. I got out myself around 7 and headed to Whole Foods to buy some groceries for dinner tonight. I'm surprising Jesse with a homemade pesto sauce with pasta, scallops, and portobello mushrooms. My stomach is in pain as I type this. But, did you know how much pine nuts are?! I remember back in 2003 when I got my first "real" (funny how the definition of that changes as you get older) job at Fresh Pickin's produce stand in BR. They were like $7 or 8 a pound and I thought that was expensive. At Whole Foods, organic (the only choice in sight) pine nuts are a whopping $34.99/lb. I guess my goal of being able to shop at WF as a measure of success and wealth is somewhat reached though can I really count it if I'm spending $11 dollars on a couple of handfulls of pine nuts? So what else to say? Good day in spite of having classes. Don't get me wrong, I like learning, but when I'm behind and I'm trying to juggle all the [exciting, but exhausting] things I obligate myself to do, school is falling last on the list of priorities. And, it can't! Because it's pretty important and I don't want to waste my time. I have to remember why I chose to go to grad school--to eventually get into a top-tier Anthropology program. I cannot do poorly and waste time and money like I did in undergrad.

Lately, with New Orleans Fashion Week and all the Amelie G-hosted festivities, I have had a renewed sense of self though I continue to search and discern. Attending the style-bloggers panel at Martine Chaisson Gallery and having various people, when I'm introduced to them, tell me that they read me--I feel like I'm moving in the right direction. I enjoy writing. I enjoy fashion. I enjoy New Orleans. Why couldn't I do this full-time eventually? Drew always believed in me, but I haven't been the most confident in myself. Even as I write this, I'm thinking about how much this is a diary entry and not something that an online audience would want to read, and I know that I have typos and format errors. I'm going to fix them eventually (or not). I really need to work on my twitter account, my online porfolio and my layout. I'm supposed to meet with a PR acquaintance of my soon in order to be schooled on socail media. Anyway, I don't desire to be a style-blogger, nor do I plan to write fashion editorials indefinitely. But, between babysitting/nannying, working at Scriptura, going to school basically to teach when I'm doubting wanting to teach language, and writing, I find myself in the glam, giving into the invitations from new acquaintances and colleages. I enjoy the social aspects of it, and I enjoy going out when I feel to be contributing to a scene legitimately.

Oh, but Spain. Jesse has decided to entertain the idea of us moving to Spain. A LOT happened this weekend, and I guess for better or for worse, has catalyzed a lot of thought about our future. I've been wanting to go to Spain for years, but I haven't thought it practical given Jesse's education, and honestly, I don't want to leave him for so long. So, as he's finishing up his law school classes, preparing for the BAR, and finishing up a 30-page writing requirement, we are putting our (read, my) in-town, new apartment hunt on hold until we know whether or not we will go to Spain in mid-October. We'll see. Fingers crossed, and I'll keep this posted! I guess that's the short of it. There's more to say like I've got two large assignments due in my Hispanic Studies and my Advanced Conversation classes, but I'll save that stress rant for another post. I'm glad to be back on, and I must remember to post often. And, to catch up on thank you notes. Ah, the weekend's almost here and once again, there's so much to do. Reminder for later: write about social media and networking, more about launching my career, and meeting people and my reservations about leaving NOLA as everything's getting started

Roman Holiday and Holiday from Blogging

Oh my, when was the last time I blogged? So much has happened since then, both good and bad. New Orleans Fashion Week and Amelie G Style Magazine's spring issue launch among the good, and of course, exciting things that Jesse and I are able to partake in on a nearly daily basis. But, I couldn't recall all if them if I tried. Tomorrow I have a long day, but I hope to recount a few of the insightful and enjoyable things that occurred in my life over the last few weeks.

Highlights: My Style Pill, Keiko Lynn, Saucy Glossie and this fellow's inspiring panel conversation and my fashion writer career beginning to take shape and Jesse and I looking into moving to Spain for a semester or two. Maybe even indefinitely. Well, I'll get to that in my next post.

Til tomorrow.
