What a fun, relaxing weekend, during which I was slightly productive. But, when I'm out of school, I don't have to worry as much about being productive, and it's been such a light load so far!
Today we had our writer's meeting for the fall issue line-up. I received two assignments, of which I had already know of one. I get to choose a third one provided no one else is interested in my preferences, and I'm looking forward to starting these since I've got more time these days. Prior to the meeting, I saw Marisa (for the first time in over a year) at her daughters' (Arianna and Jazmine) birthday party at the Children's Museum. It was good to see her and her and Neill's family after so long, but the girls are so big and barely remember me. And, my gift of books were the least exciting of their presents, but I didn't know much about their sizes so I couldn't buy cute clothes, and the more I know children, the less I want to buy toys for two reasons. One, what child do I know that doesn't have more than enough toys? Buying all the toys we buy for our kids encourages materialism, consumerism and waste-production (especially with all the marketing and packaging). Secondly, books are something you can enjoy for a longer time and they are teaching tools. I got them This is London and This is Paris, classics that have mid-century modern illustrations and chalk-full of interesting information! They're six and seven; they will read them.
Anyhow, Jesse and I walked around the Quarter this afternoon and just enjoyed the sunlight and even made it to the boardwalk, and for those of you not paying attention (which probably refers to none of my readers; ya'll probably pay more attention than I do anyway), the Mississippi is quite high!
Saturday, I worked at Scriptura as I usually do, but after at Sallie's encouragement, Jesse and I checked out Bayou Boogaloo, a three-stage mini-Jazz Fest on Bayou St. John. Jesse and I are moving to American Can in about 20 days so it was nice to check out the neighborhood, and I love festivals--tents with homemade wares, music, and street vendor foods! We experienced Woody's fish tacos, Katie's charboiled oysters, and Jacques-Imo's shrimp and alligator cheesecake! But, it was a really nice evening because we met up with Sallie, James, Margaret and Dave and after went to Sallie's amazing house to hang out and have pizza and drinks on their second-story deck. I felt like an honorary Jones sister, I joked, but there was truth my excitement.
Friday night, Jesse and I went to Sippin' in Seersucker, a fundraiser at Shops at Canal put on by the Ogden Museum for Southern Art. I actually need to put together an article for Amelie G's website so I'll link that after I'm finished.
